Penthouse at Plaza Cataluña
Interior refurbishment of a penthouse with surround terrace conceived to merge the level of detail, comfort and sophistication of a luxury hotel. The project includes a new space layout, new surfaces and fittings and the detailed design of all the furniture.
Located at the beating heart of Barcelona’s restaurant, shopping and leisure scene this penthouse apartment with surround terrace was designed by local architectu-ral practice YLAB.
The clients for the project involving the refurbishment of a former office space to accommo-date a weekend home for an English couple required a sophisticated and clutter free space where efficient buil-ding services, security and interior design were all considered equally.
Given its modest dimensions and elongated configuration, there is an effort to highlight the apartment’s outer spatial limits and create a grea-ter visual impact by replacing partitions with mobile ele-ments, thus extending the perceived sense of space without impacting the functionality of the various diffe-rent zones.
The external walls, floors and ceilings have been provided with a specific treatment for this reason, using an off-white cream colour drawing attention to these very limits. The long axis of the apartment opens onto a 45 sq.m. private terrace which extends the living spaces outdoors and provides extraordinary views over the city’s most important public space.
In order to achieve the most efficient and natural inte-rior comfort conditions, avoiding hot and cold air currents, the apartment uses the Movinord system con-sisting of surfaces of capillary tubes with continuous water circulation that both heats and cools the apart-ment when required.
Individual spaces can be con-trolled separately. The apartment is also entirely auto-mated and can be supervised and programmed remo-tely via computer or any mobile device.
Security was also an important consideration for the clients given the periodic occupation, with a total of 6 layers of defence including movement sensors, infra-red cameras and dual connection alarm.
